If you're landscaping your property and you want to keep things on a budget, then you will probably focus on options that are inexpensive at the very start. You may choose cheaper flowers, opt for smaller garden beds, and forgo expensive, built-in irrigation systems. None of these are bad ideas, but if your goal is to keep costs down, then you want think about how to do that in the long-term, too. Here are some residential landscaping choices that will keep costs down over time.
Plant sedums and other plants with low water needs.
If you choose plants that don't need a lot of water, then you probably won't have to install an irrigation system. You also won't have to use as much water to maintain your landscape, and you can probably avoid paying someone to come water your plants when you go away on vacation. So, right there, planting water-efficient plants can help save you money in a few different ways.
There are tons of varieties of sedums; they can also come in many different colors so you're not limited to one look. Other plants that don't need much water include lavender, sage, and yarrow.
Have landscaping fabric put down.
If you do have garden beds made in your yard, make sure you put landscaping fabric down on top of the soil. This is an extra step for your landscaping team, and they'll probably charge you a little more for it. However, the fabric will do a great job of keeping weeds at bay. Over time, it will save you a lot of money on weed killer or on having the weeds pulled. A good layer of mulch will help, too. It's worth paying to have an extra inch or two of mulch put on top of the landscaping fabric as it will help thwart weeds.
Have the lawn fertilized.
Even if your lawn looks okay and you know you have pretty fertile soil, you want to have your lawn fertilized about five to six times a year. If you pay for this service, you're less likely to have to pay for more expensive services like having the lawn re-seeded. You'll have fewer problems with weeds, too. A well-fertilized lawn has grass that can out-compete the weeds, so you have to spend a lot less on weed killers.
These residential landscaping services will help keep your yard in great shape and help you save money in the coming years. For more information, contact a local landscape service, such as Jeff's Lawn Care & Landscaping, LLC, to learn more.

When my husband and I bought our house years ago, we thought it would be our "starter" home and we would move in a few years. We soon had two children, and we then decided against moving since we live in a great school district and we love our neighbors. However, I was growing very tired of the appearance of our home. We painted it a different color, and it still seemed like the "same old house" that we were tired of. We finally deciding that maybe good landscaping would "do the trick" and make our home more enjoyable to use again. We were right, and I now love our home! I now love spending time in our yard and just enjoying the scenery. I have such a passion for landscaping now I decided to create a blog about it. I plan to share many landscaping tips, so come back!
