Soil Matters — How To Nourish Your Soil So It Produces A Gorgeous Lawn

Blog

If you're like most new homeowners, you've never had to maintain a lawn of your own before. Now that lawn care is part of the picture, you may be nervous about how to keep your lawn healthy. After all, no one wants to become that one person on the block with a weedy, unkempt lawn that's clearly failing to thrive. The most important thing to remember is that a gorgeous lawn starts with healthy soils underneath it.

Here's what you need to know about lawn care.

Apply Top Dressing

Most people think that fertilizer enriches the soil, but this is not the case — in fact, too much dependence on synthetic fertilizer actually depletes the nutrients in the soil and adds unhealthy amounts of nitrogen and salt. Although lawn grass needs nitrogen to grow and be healthy, too much nitrogen can kill it, and the buildup of soil also causes unhealthy growing conditions. Instead of adding synthetic fertilizer products, apply organic topdressing once a month during your growing season instead.

Compost makes an excellent top dressing for lawn grass. If you don't compost at home, or don't produce enough to top dress your lawn regularly, you can always buy inexpensive bags of compost at your local home and garden retailer.

Plant Clover

Low-growing red and white clovernot only adds interest and a lovely aroma to your lawn, but it's also good for the soil. In fact, clover was once a sign of a well-cared-for lawn. Clover improves the soil in a variety of ways. Its extensive root system includes both a tap root and a system of fibrous roots that provide the soil with natural aeration and also help reduce erosion. Clover also acts as a mulch, helping to regulate soil temperatures and to keep opportunistic weeds at bay. Like all members of the legume family, clover also serves to fix nitrogen in the soil by converting the nitrogen gas in the soil into organic compounds that nourish plant life. Clover is often used to restore soils that have been ruined by too much synthetic fertilizer.

Get a Mulching Lawn Mower

Mulching lawn mowers not only cut down on the amount of yard work you'll need to do to maintain a beautiful lawn, but they'll provide a natural source of nutrients that will help keep your lawn green and healthy. In order to avoid big clumps of cut grass in your yard, get one of the state-of-the-art mowers that grind the grass up into tiny pieces. Beautiful Landscaping Can Transform the Look of Any Home

When my husband and I bought our house years ago, we thought it would be our "starter" home and we would move in a few years. We soon had two children, and we then decided against moving since we live in a great school district and we love our neighbors. However, I was growing very tired of the appearance of our home. We painted it a different color, and it still seemed like the "same old house" that we were tired of. We finally deciding that maybe good landscaping would "do the trick" and make our home more enjoyable to use again. We were right, and I now love our home! I now love spending time in our yard and just enjoying the scenery. I have such a passion for landscaping now I decided to create a blog about it. I plan to share many landscaping tips, so come back!
