Installing A Sprinkler System? How To Avoid Mistakes

Blog

If you're going to invest in a sprinkler system this spring, now's the time to plan for the installation. This is especially important if you plan to install a sprinkler system by yourself. Mistakes with the installation can cost you time and money. Mistakes can also lead to water waste. That's why you need to make a plan. If you've never installed a sprinkler system before, read the list provided below. Here are four steps that will help you avoid problems when installing your sprinkler system.

Know Where You're Digging

When it comes to installing a sprinkler system, you need to know where you're digging. The last thing you want is to cut through a pipe while you're digging trenches for your sprinkler system. Unfortunately, that can happen if you're not prepared. To avoid that, get your yard mapped out before you start digging trenches for your sprinkler system.

Choose the Right Depth

If you're going to install a sprinkler system by yourself, make sure you choose the right depth. If you set the pipes too deep, you'll have a hard time making repairs and adjustments. If you set the pipes too close to the surface, the pipes can get dug up and damaged. A good rule of thumb is to measure the width of the pipe and dig 4 inches deeper than that. So, if you install a 1-inch sprinkler pipe, you want to bury the pipe 5 inches below the surface.

Install Separate Lines

Now that you're going to install a sprinkler system, think about your water needs. If you're only going to water your lawn, you can install a single line. That's because your lawn needs the same amount of water. But, if you're going to also water flower gardens and shrubbery, you need to install separate sprinkler lines. Separate sprinkler lines will allow you to provide the right amount of water to each area of the yard. You can also set the timer for each separate line.

Adjust the Coverage

If you're ready to install a sprinkler system, don't forget to adjust the coverage. Without the right adjustments, you could over-water your yard. You could also water the sidewalks and streets. Once you have the sprinkler system installed, take the time to adjust each sprinkler head. That way, you get the coverage you need without wasting water. Adjusting the coverage will also help you avoid dead spots in the yard.

Beautiful Landscaping Can Transform the Look of Any Home

When my husband and I bought our house years ago, we thought it would be our "starter" home and we would move in a few years. We soon had two children, and we then decided against moving since we live in a great school district and we love our neighbors. However, I was growing very tired of the appearance of our home. We painted it a different color, and it still seemed like the "same old house" that we were tired of. We finally deciding that maybe good landscaping would "do the trick" and make our home more enjoyable to use again. We were right, and I now love our home! I now love spending time in our yard and just enjoying the scenery. I have such a passion for landscaping now I decided to create a blog about it. I plan to share many landscaping tips, so come back!
